Yarn Bases

Do you get a little confused about yarns and what each one means?

I know when I first started with yarn I had no idea what I should have used and what each yarn base was for. Any way, below is a list of the yarns I dye, their weights, meters etc.  If you have any further queries, get in touch.

Lace

Lush - 80% Extra Fine Merino, 20% Silk 
1200 meters per 100g

The combination of silk and extra fine merino creates a soft drapey yarn and the firm twist ensures that it will be strong and durable, ideal for intricate lace detail.

Suri Silk - 74% Baby Suri Alpaca 26% Mulberry Silk
300 meters per 50g
The combination of alpaca and silk makes a luxurious soft, durable yarn. The alpaca fibres do not felt or pill easily, and it can be light or heavy in weight, depending on how it is spun. While similar to sheep's wool, it is warmer, not prickly, and has no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic. 

Ideal to work it alone or held double with another yarn for extra squishyness for jumpers, shawls and cowls. If you find mohair lace remotely itchy, this may be the perfect alternative for you.

4ply / Sock / Fingering

Platinum - 75% Merino, 25% Nylon
425 meters per 100g
This is a soft and squishy yarn. It's a superwash merino wool blended with nylon for added strength, making it ideal for socks. It can also be used for many other projects such as shawls and light weight clothing. 

Boo - 80% Superwash Merino, 20% Bamboo
400 meters per 100g
Superwash merino wool is blended with Bamboo for a gorgeous soft yarn and the bamboo gives the same effect of nylon for added durability. The bamboo also has wickaway properties which makes it ideal for warmer weather clothing. This yarn has amazing stitch definition and is perfect for your WIPs with lots of texture and definition.

 

Yak - 70% Superwash Merino, 20% Yak, 10% Nylon

400 meters per 100g

Superwash merino wool is blended with Yak for a lovely soft yarns and it also has a darker natural colour meaning the colours you can get with the yarns are lovely deep tones.

Luxe - 70% Superwash Merino, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere

400 meters per 100g

This luxurious yarn has a beautiful shine to it which comes from the silk, it has cashmere for a next-to-the-skin softness. The superwash merino which gives it the soft squish to the fabric. Silk yarns are great for keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Sport

Squish - 80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon
300 meters per 100g

Sport weight yarn is the one between the 4ply and DK weight, and is quite common in a lot of American patterns.  This yarn has amazing stitch definition and is perfect for your WIPs with lots of texture and definition.

DK / Double Knitting

Platinum - 75% Merino, 25% Nylon
225 meters per 100g
This is a soft and squishy yarn. It is superwash merino wool blended with nylon for added strength, making it ideal standard for jumpers. 

Shimmer - 50% Superwash Merino, 50% Silk
212 meters per 100g
Superwash merino wool is blended with Silk which produces an amazing shimmer to the yarn.  So if you are looking for something with a light shimmer and lovely stitch definition this is the one for you.  Silk yarns are great for keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Aran

Platinum - 100% Superwash Merino
166 meters per 115g
This plump soft yarn is ideal for those amazing hat patterns out there, soft and warm, perfect for keeping your head warm.
